Mecca Masjid

Description

It is one of the oldest and largest mosques in India. It is a listed heritage building situated in the old city of Hyderabad. Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah commissioned that the bricks should be made from the soil brought from Mecca which is the holiest place for the Islam. He used them in the construction of the central arch of the mosque thus the name of the mosque. The city was planned around the Mosque which acted as a centerpiece.

History

The mosque was built in a very significant time which showcases the might the rulers have at that time. A French explorer has said the following: “It is about 50 years since they began to build a splendid pagoda in the town which will be the grandest in all India when it is completed. The size of the stone is liable of special accomplishment, and that of a niche, which is the place for prayer and is an entire rock of such immense size that they spent five years in drilling it, and 500 to 600 men were engaged continually on its work. It needed still more time to roll it up on to transportation by which they brought it to the pagoda, and they took 1400 oxen to draw it."
